i {heart} skin (seriously!)

Hello and welcome!

I am often asked by clients, why I got into skin care. It's not a simple answer, but I figure it's a good place to start.

I confess: I did not always take care of my skin. Growing up, I was lucky and inherited my mother's naturally good skin, but my luck led me to negligence. I didn't think I needed to take care of my skin.

It wasn't until I turned 25 and started to fear aging (I got my first gray hair at 21, so this seemed a reasonable concern) that I purchased my first travel size skin care set. I marched into a store that sells skin care and chatted with the sales girl about my concerns, left with a whole lot of Vitamin E and decided I would give this whole "skin care thing" a try.

Up until my mid-20s, I was a fair-weather user of SPF. I tanned. Once I spent an entire day on a boat without sunscreen and ended up with sun poisoning. Then I caught on.

When I finally began to take care of my skin, I wondered where these beauty rituals had been my entire life. I loved how my face felt when smooth, clean, moisturized and healthy. The longer I do it, the more obsessed I become with my skin care routine. I know the magic of a good skin day.

This newfound product addiction led me to end up working for the company that sold me that first skin care kit, for almost three years. And it was while working there, that I found my passion. I realized I loved my job most when I helped customers solve their skin concerns. I love learning about products - about the ingredients and why they work the way the work. I love teaching people what they need to know to care for their own skin. Nothing makes me happier than seeing positive changes on the faces of my clients and customers.

Alas, I could only work in the retail realm for so long. Now in my 30s, I wanted a career that I could feel passionate about too. I had only ever had two facials in my life at this point (Gasp! I KNOW!) so I was only vaguely aware of what estheticians did but I had a hunch it might be something I'd enjoy. I did some googling, found the school I would later enroll in and read up on the curriculum. Everything sounded exactly like something I would like to do. I made the leap.

Since starting my career in the field, I have fallen even more in love with skin, the science of skin care and the power of self-care. I started this blog to teach myself as much as my readers, about the skin. The way I see it, you get one face and it's the first thing most everyone sees when you are out in the world. It should be lovingly cared for, protected and invested in.

My name is Jenny and i {heart} skin.
