How Often Should You Get a Facial?
There's a question I probably get asked more than any other question in my line of work. Everyone wants to know how often you need a facial. It's a excellent question that I've been meaning to address, so here goes!
The simple answer is: every month.
Now. Don't freak out. In a perfect world few of us can pull off getting a facial every single month, but bear with me, as I explain my reasoning. Then we'll talk more about options and how to maintain your skin health with facials, even if you can't swing monthly visits.
The main reason for getting a facial every four weeks, is because this is the amount of time it typically takes your skin to complete its normal turnover cycle and regenerate. Just like anything else in your body, your skin is constantly evolving and turning over. As we age, or cellular turnover slows down. Getting a facial each month keeps the process on track, and helps it along. This then gives the skin a more toned and youthful appearance.
But facials do more than just relax you and clean up your face. Often as an esthetician I am performing professional strength cleansing, extracting, exfoliating and moisturizing on a level that you just can't get at home. Not unlike going to the dentist for regular cleanings, you sometimes need a professional to clean your skin. After a month is when you may start to notice excess buildup of dry surface skin and congested pores returning.
If you are wanting to treat specific conditions such as acne or hyperpigmentation or premature aging, regular facials are best for helping you get progressive results. Taking care of your skin is an investment, so you should strive to maintain your results with consistent care. It can sometimes take anywhere from 3-6 treatments for lasting changes to appear. That said, getting regular facials will train your skin and it will start to respond better and more quickly, over time.
So what happens if you can't get in that often? Well, there are some factors that will help you get more mileage out of your facial. The biggest one being good home care. If you take care of your face at home with quality product and regular exfoliation, you can probably squeeze 6-8 weeks in between visits. Do you drink lots of water and wear your SPF every day? These habits will also give your skin health a boost between treatments.
Another option is getting regular mini-facials. A treatment does not have to be 75 steam-filled minutes to be effective. You can pop in for 35-minute maintenance visits with your skin care professional or alternate longer facials with shorter services. Many of my clients like to come in one month for a full facial then, pop in the next month for a quick dermaplane treatment. There's no one-size-fits-all rule for the how and when of facials. It's the regularity that is key.
Lastly, I want to emphasize that you shouldn't get discouraged if your budget or schedule doesn't allow for monthly facials. Even getting in a handful of times a year is still hugely beneficial and nothing to scoff at. A good goal might be once every quarter, helping your skin transition gracefully between seasons. Don't be afraid to talk to your esthetician about your goals, but also your lifestyle and budget. A good skin care professional will be happy to help you find a routine that works for you.
