What is LED Light Therapy and Why Do You Need it in Your Facial?

Hello again! When I last blogged, I may have mentioned that some new modalities have found their way into my treatment room. This post is long overdue, as LED Light Therapy is something I've been working with for about a year at i {heart} skin. It is one of my favorite non-invasive treatments for the skin and has so, SO many benefits. After a year of getting great results with a couple of hand-held devices, I feel confident enough in LED Light Therapy to upgrade to an even more sophisticated and comprehensive

system. And I will soon be updating my menu with more options for incorporating LED into your facial visits.

So let's talk about how it all works!

The Celluma LED panel is is a unique other low-level light therapy device.

Based on NASA research, Celluma delivers blue, red and near-infrared light energy simultaneously, to safely treat a wide variety of conditions. Each wavelength is absorbed by different molecules that act as a signaling mechanism for different cellular processes. For example, some reduce inflammation and some kill bacteria, while others enhance localized microcirculation.

What is LED Light Therapy?

LED Low Level light therapy is the application of specific wavelengths of light to tissue, in order to create a therapeutic effect. The way this was best explained to me was that it works similar to the way photosynthesis works in plants. Light fuels the cells and gives them more energy to function. The light triggers a biochemical reaction which can help reduce inflammatory responses and increase micro-circulation to deliver nutrition and antioxidants in the skin.

The science behind LED therapy has been in modern medicine to treat everything from bruising to cancer. For our purpose though, we are mostly talking about how LED benefits the skin.

What are the benefits?

As you may have gathered, light therapy has a broad range of applications but my favorite uses for it in the treatment room are for acne, aging and just giving my clients a spectacular glow. Approved by the FDA for treating skin, light therapy works by enhancing your skins natural processes. Therefore it works very well in conjuction with the other modalities performed in treatment. It makes for a great add on, that enhances nearly all of the regular benefits of your facial treatment. It helps speed up the healing process after advanced exfoliation, kills acne bacteria and calms redness or other irritation.

As we age, our skin can become sluggish. Cellular turnover doesn't happen as quickly. Collagen production slows down and the skin can even begin to look dull.

Red light LED therapy helps give your skin's metabolism the little nudge that it needs to kick back into gear and produce at a more youthful rate.

When I first started working with LED I used a handheld red light device on my skin daily for about a week to test it out. Within about 48 hours, I already began to notice that my skin seemed plumper, more lifted and more radiant.

Blue light therapy on the other hand, is useful for treating acne because it kills the p.acne bacterias that may be living on the surface of the skin, exacerbating breakouts. It is great for detoxifying the skin.

But what if you have breakouts and fine lines? Another neat thing about the LED devices I work with, is that they combine red and blue light to address multiple issues. The deeper red hues of light therapy help with your skin's recovery. So while blue light is addressing surface bacteria, the red lights help reduce any inflammation that may be hanging around as the result of the breakout.

How often do you need it?

Case studies with LED Light Therapy have proven that it reduces breakouts and can temporarily plump out fine lines and wrinkles in just one treatment. However, if used consistently over time, it can produce cumulative, lasting results. To truly experience the benefits, I recommend monthly or even weekly visits. LED can actually be used daily for maximum benefits. A few of my clients have purchased at-home devices and have been very pleased with the changes happening in their skin. That said, whether you receive LED light therapy once a month or once in a blue moon, you will still experience amazing benefits for your overall skin health.

Is LED right for you? With very few exceptions, LED is right for everybody and I recommend it to any of my clients who are wanting to take their skin to the next level. In particular, I like it for clients who are looking for a more holistic way to treat fine lines or acne. By utilizing this gentle modality into the rest of your skin care, you will see added benefit to any skin care investment and you will love the healthy glow that comes with.
