The First Two Years & The Future of i {heart} skin

Happy June to all my favorite faces! As I've recently announced to my clients, i {heart} skin will be moving to a new home on July 1st, which also finds my little facial boutique celebrating two years being open! Now that we are counting down to moving day, it made sense to me to sit down and blog a little about the first two years of owning my business and bringing my skin care practice to life.

In March of 2016, I had begun working on what I thought was a five-year plan to start a business. It escalated rapidly however, when a few months later, I got an opportunity to rent my first little room. It was an opportunity that was too good to pass up on. And so I started my business in July of 2016.

From the beginning, I wanted to create amazing facials that went beyond laminated protocols and allotted products. I wanted to create a platform to truly educate people about their skin and to teach them how to care for it. I wanted to engage on social media and advocate for skin care as a worthy self care practice. I wanted to collaborate with amazing brands and other local entrepreneurs.

My first two years building i {heart} skin have been surprisingly joyous. There have definitely been difficult moments and many lessons learned along the way. But ultimately, I have found pursuing my passion to be 100% worth it. I started small, because that's what I could do at the time. I made more investments as I grew. The biggest investment being in my education.

When business was slow in the beginning. I used the time to take more advanced classes and workshops. I learned everything I could about the skin, new products and modalities.

Through my advanced education, I found my true passion in skin care, which is holistic facial massage. Before I knew it, I had amassed an entirely new skillset and tool kit for treating the skin. And new philosophies to go with. I had more ideas and options than I knew what to do with myself, let alone try to offer my clients. In the past two years, I've been a little embarrassed by the number of menu changes I've made, trying to make it all fit. Coming up on year three at i {heart} skin, I decided to take a deep breath and a step back to figure it out.

Since the beginning of this year I've been a little bit hunkered down, working on the vision. I've been more absent on social media. Radio silence here on the blog. Turning down events and invitations. Focusing more on my processes in the treatment room and seeking clarity around my next moves. And finally a little clarity came.

Two years after starting i {heart} skin out of a 10x10 room in Wheat Ridge, because it landed in my lap, another opportunity appeared in my world that was too good to pass on. A new location. A little closer to home and to many of my clients. A little more room to expand. A little more quiet space for visitors to find relaxation and self care. A fresh slate to refresh my vision and create the business I truly set out to create when I made my five-year plan.

In some ways, not a lot is changing. A shift has been occurring all along. But I'm excited to highlight some of the things that are new, and my intentions for i {heart} skin, going forward.

The Menu

As I always like to assure my loyal clients, nothing is changing so much that you can't still get the services you've always loved. What I've done this iteration (and what I hope to stick with!) is create a truly customizable facial that allows clients to mix and match modalities and curate their own experience, if desired.

I listened to a lot of feedback that the choices were somewhat unclear. I also find that many of my clients don't even know the full spectrum of what I am able to offer, so my hope is that the new menu will make that more transparent. I've made it simple, starting with one Signature Boutique Facial.

The 55-Minute Signature treatment includes elements of a traditional European facial - aromatherapy and scalp massage, steam cleanse, gentle scrub and extractions, light facial massage, custom mask, finishing product and sun protection.

You can opt for the Signature Boutique Facial as a standalone facial. OR from there, you can essentially build your own facial by selecting from a variety of advanced add-ons.

Choose options, such as dermaplaning, gua sha face massage, botanical peel, etc. to create a 75-minute or 95-minute deluxe treatment. You can also select my 95-minute Ritual Rejuvenation facial for an intuitive customized experience that draws from my full spectrum of modalities.

More Holistic Options

While my practice will never shun traditional treatments like dermaplaning and peels, I believe a holistic approach to be completely on par and will advocate for at least infusing some of these practices into your skin care. The new Signature Facial allows you the option to try a little side of something holistic, as an added enhancement.

That said, if you get a little taste and want to experience more, there's also now a full menu of holistic facial rejuvenation and facial massage facials. Each facial incorporates a different advanced facial ritual. From Gua Sha to Reiki, Facial Reflexology, Thai Herbal Poultice Facial Massage and Manual Lymphatic Drainage Facial Massage.

The Heart Your Skin Series Package

I recently attended a retreat for estheticians in Phoenix AZ, hosted by one of my product makers, Skin Script RX. Over the course of three days, I attended intensive learning sessions which reconnected me to the foundations of skin science and affirmed what I have come to believe about the skin over the past few years. I believe in creating lasting change with progressive skin care, rather than aggressive quick fixes.

The science and case studies are clear that transforming the skin takes time and real work. So for my clients who are ready and willing to do the work, I've created a treatment series package that allows us to do that as a team. The Heart Your Skin Series package is a focused treatment plan for clients willing to do 8-12 weeks of regular visits and follow a customized homecare prescription. After completing the series, the goal is for you to be secure on your skin care journey and able to maintain results with less frequent visits.

For basic regular maintenance I will still offer my monthly membership option, but the Heart Your Skin series will be for those who require more consistent and progressive treatments to address active acne, aging, pigmentation or other persistent issues.

More Empowerment

Although running a small business seemingly makes hours in a day disappear at alarming rates, I am constantly reminded that I am happiest and most successful as an esthetician when I don't keep any secrets from my clients. I love blogging, educating and helping my clients understand their own skin, so that they feel their most confident caring for it and get the best results.

I am actively working to get back on track with blogging and bringing you educational content as much as possible. I'll be bringing back a new and improved Heart Your Skin Challenge email series in late fall and hope to begin organizing some educational workshops in the near future.

More Local Products

As a Colorado native and Denver resident of seven years, I value my community and the economy of my home state. As much as possible I try to source products from local makers. Over the last two years, I've been pleased to bring in products from seven different Colorado-based brands. Skin care lines like intelligent elixirs and Peak10 Skin are quickly making their way into most of my treatments and into the home care of my clients. I encourage you to support these brands not only as a way of supporting local, but because they address the skin with our unique Colorado climate challenges in mind.

As always, I choose products based a number of factors. I never sell products that I don't use, love and trust for my own skin. In addition to keeping it local whenever possible, I am committed to sourcing products that use clean ingredients and active science. I insist that all products be cruelty free and reasonably-priced for my clients.

A Less-Stress Experience

Speaking of affordability. How many times have you enjoyed a relaxing facial, and then got stressed at the end when gratuity put you a little over budget? Have you ever had to cancel a self-care appointment because you were afraid of overspending again? I've been there, and I get it. It has always been important to me to keep my services and products affordable, because skin care should not be a luxury. I believe it should accessible be for everyone.

Effective July 1st, upon entering my new space, please note that the new location is a stress-free, gratuity free, self-care sanctuary. In lieu of tipping, I ask that you invest your money further into yourself by upgrading to a longer service, taking home a product to extend the benefits of your treatment or booking another future service with me.

Now that I've spilled all the details, I truly can't wait to open the doors on Year Three and a new chapter at i {heart} skin. But more importantly, I can't wait to open the doors at my new space and welcome my clients to the experience I was dying to create for them all along.
