Why I've Gone Gratuity Free


Hello Friends! I've been getting some interesting reactions to my new tipping policy, so I thought I'd take a minute to explain it a little more and hopefully make it a little more clear, why I've decided to go this route.

Effective July 1st, I posted my new tipping policy which is as follows: i {heart} skin is a stress-free, GRATUITY FREE, self care sanctuary. In lieu of tipping, I suggest that you invest further in your self care by upgrading to a more enhanced treatment, purchasing a home care product or by booking your next facial with me.

Of course, tipping is never mandatory in my industry, but judging by the number of people who think I'm crazy for doing away with it, it is pretty standard practice.

But to be honest, I've always felt awkward about it. I love spending an hour with a client caring for their skin and allowing them time and space to relax. I only hate the part where the relaxation ends and someone has to begin contemplating or calculating whatever "extra" amount they feel like giving me that day. It can change the energy of the transaction from bliss to business, in a way I don't love. So in some ways, this is just as much for me as it is for my clients.

As a small business owner, still trying to grow, I absolutely appreciate the support of my clients. But tipping me isn't the only way to contribute to my business. There are other ways that could be benefitting YOU as much as me! Let me tell you a few of them:

1) Add an extra enhancement to your facial

The average facial tip, in my time working on hundreds of clients, is about $20. So with that in mind, I made all of my advanced enhancements- such as LED Panel, dermaplaning, peels, facial reflexology and advanced face massage - $20 a piece. (Note: For members, enhancements are $10.)

I still get that same $20 and I get to do more of what I love, which is create glowing skin and give you a little respite from the stress of your day. I created my new office space to be a sanctuary, so I invite you to stay just a little longer, if you've got the time. Your skin and your stress levels will thank you, I promise.

2) Purchase a product to take home

Skin care is an investment. Getting regular facials is wonderful, but the real transformation happens with regular home care. I love helping clients put together a routine that works for their skin, even if it's once piece at a time. In fact, I recommend overhauling your skin care this way to create progressive, lasting change. By purchasing something small - a cleanser, SPF, a mask, a toner, a moisturizer or just a new tool for your skin - you support my business and you support the results we've just achieved with our facial. Everyone wins!

3) Book again sooner

Another option is simply to come back a little sooner than you would have before. In a perfect world we would all get facials monthly, but even if you're coming quarterly (or let's be honest... semiannually) adding ONE more facial this year, is exponentially better than waiting until next year to come back. You reap the benefits for your skin, and I can better support your skin with that extra care. Sounds like another win win to me!

4) Send your friends

Here's an option that supports me that doesn't cost you anything! Refer a friend my way and your next enhancement is free! I get a new appointment, you get a free upgrade. I even include a complimentary enhancement for any new clients. So your friend gets a free enhancement and you just get to be an amazing friend. Yep, totally win win win.

5) But seriously, treat yourself!

As your esthetician, I have spent the past couple of years obsessively studying and learning advanced techniques. It was my dream to bring the best and most unique modalities to my facial boutique, but if my clients aren't taking advantage of these offerings, I'm not truly putting my skill set to use and I don't want you to miss out! If you're game to try something new, just let me know at your next Signature Boutique Facial, that you're ready to try something off the enhancement menu and you want to add it on. The word gratuity is tied to the word gratitude. I feel compelled to acknowledge that plenty of my clients show me gratitude in non-monetary ways, which I LOVE. Bringing me coffee, cupcakes or a random gift. Leaving me a lovely review on social media or even just sending me a text telling me how happy their skin is. I want to express that these things are more valuable to me than tips ever could be.

So with that in mind, I thank everyone who has expressed concern. But now that it's out in the air, I do hope you'll join me in making i {heart} skin a stress free sanctuary and come partake in all that my facial boutique has to offer.
