The Spring Seasonal Beauty Ritual

Hi and Happy Spring! Here we are arriving at another season and one of my favorites! Spring is here! Or at least, hopefully on the way for most of us. Which means it's time for a new beauty ritual to mark the changing of seasons!

For me, spring is all about newness. I love the smells of new growth and flowers blossoming as the earth starts to thaw and the days start to get just a wee bit longer. It always feels like a magical time of year, so in creating this ritual, I really wanted to capture a little bit of that.

The Spring ritual is best performed early evening or maybe as part of your weekend self care. I designed this protocol to incorporate some of my favorite seasonal scents and it is all about getting into your senses while enjoying a nourishing and hydrating at-home ritual. This one will leave your skin all in-bloom and aglow.

The Spring Ritual

What You'll Need:* * Facial Oil

* Hydrating Toner

* Nourishing Fruit Mask

* Moisturizer

* A facial towel or washcloth

*My product recommendations are listed at the end of this post but feel free to use whatever products you have on-hand that work for your skin!

Optional:

* Gemstone Facial Roller or Tool

* A brush for mask application

* Cotton rounds

Prep: As always you can customize the seasonal beauty ritual to meet your time constraints. However, If you are able to set aside a little time once per week or even once per month, this is a great protocol to spend a little time on. One idea I have to make it extra special might be to buy yourself a few real flowers and display them in the room where you usually perform your self care. You could also begin and end the ritual with a spritz of your favorite spring perfume or mist. Anything that makes self-care something you look forward to can only stand to enhance your experience. And your consistency.

P.S. In case you need a little mood music to set the tone, I've created another seasonal playlist for spring! You can listen to in on Spotify here.

Step One: Oil Cleansing - For this protocol, we are getting multi-purpose with our facial oil, replacing a traditional cleanse with oil-cleansing to prep the skin for the rest of the ritual. Oil cleansing is beneficial for just about all skin types as it helps to attract dirt, makeup, pollution and excess oil from the pores. It helps rebalance the skin's natural oil production cycles and purifies the skin without stripping it.

Oil-cleansing works pretty much exactly like it sounds. We are going to use a small dollop of oil and massage it thoroughly into the skin just as you would with a cleanser. After about two minutes of this, use warm towel to remove. Gently press the warm towel to cover your whole face, then gently wipe away the oil in small circular motions, but take care not to rub too hard. Rinse your towel and continue this step as many times as needed until you have removed any makeup or other product from your skin before moving on to the next step.

Step Two: Second Oil Application & Toner Mist - Although we just removed the oil from our cleanse, we are now going to apply more oil to the skin. The first application served as our cleanse the second application will serve as hydration and nourishment for the skin, as well as provide slip for our facial massage. We want to apply a light layer of oil. Not so much that the skin feels slathered, but enough so that your tool can glide easily over the skin without pulling or adding pressure.

To facilitate this further, spritz a generous mist of your toner on top of the oil and around the whole face. Now we should have a comfortable amount of product to work into the skin with our massage.

Step Three: Facial Massage - Using your facial tool, begin to perform some light massage on your neck and face as shown in the videos below. This is a very easy 5-step routine you can do using a gemstone roller tool or gua sha stone. An easy way to remember the routine is to work in fives. Five strokes per section working in five sections:

Step 1 - Downward strokes on the neck

Step 2 - Outward strokes along/under the jawline

Step 3 - Outward strokes along/under the cheekbones

Step 4 - Small outward strokes under the eyes using light pressure

Step 5 - Upward strokes above the brows and covering the forehead

If you do not have a facial tool, you can simply use your hands. Use your fingers and apply light pressure with the pads of your fingertips to give your face some light facial massage. Regardless of what tool you use, the idea is to work gently to stimulate lymphatic drainage. Lymphatic drainage helps naturally detoxify the skin which helps with a host of skin issues and promotes a healthy glow. Massage for as long as it feels good, working the oil and toner into the skin and giving them a bit of time to absorb.

5 Steps without Tools

5 Steps with a Jade Roller

Five Steps with a Jade Stone

Repeat the sequence once on each side of the face. You can do it twice if you like, or add in any extra moves that you feel called to do. Once you feel complete, remove any excess product that has not been absorbed into the skin. Use another warm towel or washcloth for this step so that the skin is nice and clean for the next step.

Step Four: Nourishing Fruit Mask - Apply your mask using your hands or a mask brush, following the massage. This time of year, I love fruit masks which provide an rich antioxidant boost to the skin. Currently, I am obsessed with the Peach & Honey Mask from Sorella Apothecary because it purifies, plumps and hydrates the skin. It also smells just like peaches and honey. Perfect for evoking the spirit of spring! Leave your mask on for the duration indicated by the instructions and then remove. Step Five: Moisture to Finish - Although we've done a lot of hydration already, we want to leave the skin with a layer of moisture to really finish of the ritual and instill all the benefits of this protocol. For this step, any favorite moisturizer will do. You could also layer with any favorite serum or another spritz of toner, if you so desire.
